The WHO „International Healthy Cities Conference“ 2018 takes place in Belfast and provides an opportunity for exchange with an interdisciplinary auditorium; e.g. innovators, political decision-makers and experts in the international community. Thematic focus is on topics like better health, well-being and sustainable development in cities and urban settings. It will present examples of pioneering initiatives; opportunities for learning, knowledge exchange and collaboration; and ideas and solutions to take home and apply to local challenges.

Most people live in cities and are affected by the challenges of urban life. These challenges include, for example, air quality, inclusion, inequality and long-term sustainability; especially against the background of climate change. Urban health is a global issue and should currently be one of the most important societal-political priorities.

The Belfast conference will also provide an opportunity to discuss how the WHO European Healthy Cities Network can help address urban challenges and ensure that we learn from the past and work towards a better future.

The Conference objectives are to:

  • exchange knowledge from practices on challenges and progress from healthy cities’ and healthy communities’ initiatives across WHO global regions;
  • demonstrate the critical role of governance for health and sustainable development at the local and urban levels;
  • inspire and strengthen commitment to healthy cities in the context of tomorrow’s challenges and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda;
  • consider local leadership and its impact on successful collective action; and
  • foster discussions through special events and knowledge-exchange seminars that reshape and reimagine Healthy Cites in all WHO regions.

It will focus on the six themes of the new political vision for the WHO European “Healthy Cities Network”, drafted by the Network’s Political Vision Group: people, place, participation, prosperity, planet and peace. The Conference will address the interlinkages and integrated nature of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that make up the 2030 Agenda through its 6 themes.

The participation fee depends on nationality as well as date of registration.
